With any innovative medical treatment, Ketamine therapy can be inaccessible to many people, as I discovered.


I asked my doctor about the possibility of receiving ketamine treatment a few years ago. I am fortunate to have above-average health insurance benefits and access to doctors at a well-respected research university. Additionally, my job provides me with some flexibility when scheduling personal appointments. However, despite these advantages, I was unable to get the treatment.
This is what happened to me.


After taking six months for my doctor to approve my treatment, the clinic he referred me to contacted me to schedule an appointment. They informed me that I would need to visit the clinic twice weekly for 4-6 weeks. Each session costs $300, which I would have to pay in total before treatment started, meaning the total treatment cost for their part would be $1,500 paid in advance. It would also require me to miss two full days of work each week, resulting in a massive loss of income. And it did not include psychotherapy- they did not even offer it.


Did my awesome insurance cover any of it? Nope. I was told most insurance companies will not pay for it.


I politely told the person on the other end of the line that I couldn't schedule an appointment. After the call, I felt disappointed and even a bit angry. It's tough to see that the treatment that could finally alleviate my symptoms after so many years was out of my reach.

IN MY OFFICE: My office is located within the serene and peaceful Jai Dee Yoga and Wellness Studio, in Seminole Heights, Tampa, Florida. When you step in, you will be welcomed by a warm and inviting ambiance that's designed to soothe your senses. With double reclining seating, cozy lighting, and scented candles, you will immediately feel at ease. The setting creates a safe and relaxing atmosphere, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.


REMOTE/VIRTUAL: There's nothing quite like the comfort of being in your own home. You have complete control over the environment and atmosphere, allowing you to customize it to your exact preferences. You might choose to lower the lights, light a scented candle, and snuggle up in your favorite blanket to create a calming and secure atmosphere. I am with you every step of the way, using Zoom to stay connected easily. Moreover, you can rest easy knowing that the required chaperone or sitter of your choice will be nearby at all times. ensuring your safety and well-being.


IN YOUR HOME: For the ultimate convenience and comfort, my assistant and I will come directly to your home to provide KAP services. With in-home services, you have complete control over your environment, allowing you to feel at ease in familiar surroundings. Whether you prefer to stay in your bedroom or relax in your living room, we'll bring the service to you, so you can enjoy added safety and calmness. Unlike the REMOTE/VIRTUAL setting, a chaperone/sitter is not required because we are there with you however, you may feel added assurance knowing a friend or family member who you trust is nearby.

CREATING YOUR KAP SETTING: ​Here are some tips to create a perfect environment: - Choose a quiet room in your home where you won't be disturbed. - Ensure the lighting is soft and soothing and the temperature is comfortable. - Add some plants or flowers to the space to bring a touch of nature and freshness. - You may also want to incorporate calming scents like lavender or chamomile to enhance the relaxation experience.



WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR KETAMINE-ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY?



Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a suitable option for individuals who are struggling with anxiety, depression, or PTSD and want to take control of their mental health. These conditions are often caused by life changes, grief, relationship issues, or burnout.


KAP can be helpful for those who have tried other treatments and found no relief. It is also an excellent choice for anyone who is ready to explore themselves and experience personal and spiritual growth.


KAP is a great option for people who value the psychotherapy process and are willing to fully engage in it.​


A new patient will not be a good candidate at this time if under 18 or over 70, is pregnant, has a history of intracranial pressure, is actively struggling with illicit substance abuse, serious heart issues, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and has BMI greater than 40, is using/taking kratom, has psychosis, active methadone, suboxone, and clozapine prescription.



WHAT HAPPENS DURING A KETAMINE-ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSION?



There are three different session types involved with KAP—preparation sessions, dosing sessions, and integration sessions.


Before KAP begins, you will participate in a 90-minute mental health assessment. This assessment is all about you and your health. We're going to take a look at what's going on in your body, mind, spirit, and life to figure out what might be causing any mental health issues you're experiencing. You'll fill me in on your medical history, symptoms, family, social, and mental health history so I can get a good idea of what's going on. My goal is to identify the root causes of any issues you're having and come up with a plan to help you feel better. And of course, we'll see if KAP is the best option for you.


If we determine that KAP is the way to go, we proceed with one or two preparation sessions. During these sessions we explore what your KAP intentions are. You can freely discuss your goals, expectations, and concerns, as well as any previous experiences with ketamine or other psychedelics. I will provide you with information about how ketamine works and what to expect during the dosing session. This session is crucial for building a therapeutic relationship and ensuring your emotional and mental readiness for the KAP experience.


During a KAP dosing session, we first review the instructions you received from the doctor who prescribed you the Ketamine lozenges*. You will take your blood pressure to ensure it is within the safe range. Then, you will self-administer the ketamine lozenges by placing them under your tongue, where it is allowed to dissolve slowly. You will relax in an oversized reclining chair, with eye shades and headphones on. This allows you to fully focus on your thoughts and emotions during the experience. I will be there to support you throughout the session and help you navigate any intense feelings that may come up.


The goal of the session is to help you work through emotional blocks or trauma by accessing new perspectives and insights that may be facilitated by the ketamine experience.


As ketamine enters the bloodstream, it can produce a range of effects, including a feeling of dissociation from the body, a sense of euphoria, and altered perceptions of time and space. These effects can be intense and may last for several hours.


After the session, we will schedule one or two integration sessions to help you process your experiences and discuss any insights or growth you may have gained. I utilize an integrative psychotherapy approach that is tailored to your individual needs. This approach combines various psychotherapeutic modalities, such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, parts work, shadow work, and more, to create a safe and supportive space for your healing and personal growth.


*Journey Clinical prescribes ketamine for two dosing sessions.

WHO PRESCRIBES THE KETAMINE?


Ketamine is a highly effective medication prescribed by expert medical professionals to treat genuine disorders. Like most medications, it is prescribed only after a thorough evaluation by a medical doctor and deemed eligible for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). You may get the evaluation and prescription from your own doctor or from Journey Clinical, a medical group I am affiliated with. Please note that your doctor determines the evaluation cost, while the price of the medication depends on the pharmacy. The fees for the psychotherapy sessions are not included in these costs.



WHAT DOES KETAMINE DO?


Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly- acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement. Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges. In my work with Journey Clinical we only use the sublingual lozenge form.

Ketamine is known for its dissociative effect, which means it creates a sense of detachment between the mind and the body. This often leads to an out-of-body experience. While ketamine is not classified as a true psychedelic, it does possess psychedelic properties and can induce an altered state of consciousness. This state of mind allows the individual to experience a state of consciousness beyond their usual waking state.


In this state, the mind can access subconscious information. Ketamine is a powerful destructor of limiting beliefs around ourselves and our world, allowing one to see themselves truly without all the labels and limitations. It often creates a euphoric feeling for people and many people report having a sense of oneness and connectedness to others and to something bigger than themselves. Ketamine can also allow people to revisit times and memories of trauma and reconsolidate the memories around those events in a less painful, fearful, or traumatic way.
